The Toyota bZ4x was the brand’s first global pure-electric offering that made its debut in 2022 and it has now been given its first mid-life update. Toyota unveiled the updated bZ4X, giving it a revised design, an upgraded battery for increased range, and a new blue circle badge marking Toyota’s growing presence in the battery-electric market.
However, while the bZ4X will be the first model to showcase this blue badge, not all future Toyota vehicles featuring it will be battery-electric. Expect to see it rolled out across select powertrains in the Toyota Australia lineup in the coming months.
A sharper, more defined look
The facelifted bZ4X features Toyota’s latest ‘hammerhead’ front-end design, which incorporates slimmer LED headlights, high-mounted fog lights, a reshaped lower bumper, and vertical air aprons. The wheel-arch mouldings have transitioned from matte black to a gloss black finish, while the rear design remains largely unchanged.
Inside, the infotainment system receives a notable upgrade, with the touchscreen expanding from 12.3 inches to 14.0 inches and running on new software. This change relocates the start button next to the steering column and adds control knobs beside the display. The climate control system ditches rocker switches but gains physical dials for temperature adjustment. Additionally, the gear selector has been moved further back to accommodate two exposed wireless phone chargers.

Improved range and performance
The updates are not just cosmetic as Toyota has enhanced the bZ4X’s power output and driving range, positioning it as a stronger competitor to the Tesla Model Y. Here are the updated specifications for the European model:
Battery capacity | 57.7 kWh | 73.1 kWh | 73.1 kWh |
Drive type | FWD | FWD | AWD |
Claimed range (WLTP) | 445 km | 573 km | 520 km |
Power | 123kW | 165kW | 252kW |
Charging times remain consistent across both variants. Using a 150kW DC fast charger, the battery can charge from 10-80% in approximately 45 minutes, while a full charge via a standard household power outlet (Mode 2) takes over 30 hours.
Towing capacity for the RAV4-sized electric SUV has been improved to 1500kg for the all-wheel-drive variants.
Enhanced capability and driving experience
The top-spec AWD variant of the Toyota bZ4X will feature X-Mode and Grip Control, enhancing off-road performance with improved traction and stability. Its dual-motor setup will produce 160kW of power and 337Nm of torque. Meanwhile, Toyota states it has worked on the suspension as well for “lower noise and vibration levels and improved comfort and driving dynamics.”
Inside, the cabin will include soundproofed materials and an upholstered dashboard panel to reduce noise, while the electric motor delivers instant torque for smooth acceleration. These updates will position the bZ4X as a stronger contender in the increasingly competitive electric SUV market.
Pricing and availability
The Toyota bZ4x made its Australian debut just a year ago and this updated version is set to arrive in the final quarter of 2025. The current FWD bZ4X starts at $71,653 drive-away, while the AWD variant is priced from $80,923 drive-away. Expect the updated Toyota electric SUV to carry a premium for its improved range and additional features.
Toyota’s global EV push
Alongside the new and improved bZ4X, Toyota has hinted at production versions of its Toyota C-HR +, an electric ute and LandCruiser concepts, which are expected to launch in Europe by 2026. Even though Australia has shown immense preference for hybrids over EVs, the top-selling brand of the country is still developing its zero-emission lineup to meet global demands.
