MG has lifted the covers on its latest concept vehicle, the Cyber X, at the 2025 Shanghai Motor Show. The all-new SUV concept brings a striking, squared-off design to the forefront as the MG Cyber X embraces a more rugged aesthetic inspired by iconic off-roaders such as the Land Rover Defender and Toyota LandCruiser Prado.

Boxy design and retro cues

In contrast to the softer, curvier lines of MG’s existing SUVs like the ZS and HS, the Cyber X features a sharply defined, boxy profile. Measuring approximately 4.3 metres in length, it occupies a similar footprint to the MG ZS but is shorter than the upcoming MG S5 replacement. The compact proportions also make it smaller than established 4WD rivals like the Defender 90 or Prado.

One of the standout features is the return of pop-up headlights, a nostalgic nod to classics like the Mazda Miata. SAIC’s chief designer Jozef Kaban – who previously held key design roles at BMW and Volkswagen – suggested the Cyber X aims to revive iconic automotive styling cues often lost in today’s digital-led designs.

However, given modern safety regulations surrounding pedestrian protection, it remains uncertain whether these pop-up headlights will make it to production.

Platform and powertrain

The Cyber X is believed to ride on MG’s new E3 platform, which supports both plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains. A key innovation is its cell-to-body integration, where the battery structure contributes to overall vehicle rigidity and space efficiency. There is no word yet as to what kind of performance this off-road oriented SUV is going to pack in its production form.

Production outlook: Rapid development possible

According to Kaban, China’s accelerated vehicle development cycles could see the Cyber X transformed into a production-ready model quickly. The concept is not positioned as a replacement for any current MG SUV but rather as a standalone offering that expands the brand’s range for style-conscious and adventure-ready buyers.

Interior and tech: Oppo partnership confirmed

Although the concept on display features darkened windows that conceal its interior, MG has confirmed that cabin technologies have been developed in partnership with mobile phone manufacturer Oppo. Expect fancy screens, an AI-powered digital assistant and a range of tech conveniences.

Looking ahead

As MG continues to evolve its global identity, the Cyber X marks a significant move away from the current brand identity in global markets about budget-friendly electrified offerings for the masses. Like the MG Cyberster, a production-ready MG Cyber X could be the next enthusiast-centric offering from this brand, perhaps trying to create its own icon like the Suzuki Jimny or Ford Bronco. Details on powertrains, interior features, and market availability of the Cyber X – including potential release dates – are expected in the near future.
