At the 2025 Shanghai Motor Show, the world finally got to see the all-new Lexus ES luxury sedan. As the second of three battery electric vehicles (BEVs) scheduled for release by March 2026, the 8th-generation Lexus ES introduces a refreshed design language, a choice of hybrid and electric powertrains, and a suite of cutting-edge technologies aimed at enhancing comfort, safety, and driving dynamics. Global rollout is expected to begin from mid-2026.

Electrification Strategy and Powertrain Options
Lexus continues to pursue a multi-energy strategy, reflected in the latest ES offering both Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) variants. The new Lexus ES is built on a newly optimised version of the GA-K platform to accommodate both types of powertrains, engineered at Toyota’s Technical Centre in Shimoyama. The inclusion of diverse powertrain options aims to accommodate varied market needs while aligning with environmental goals.

The hybrid variants include a newly developed 2.0-litre system and an enhanced 2.5-litre unit with all-wheel drive (AWD). Battery electric versions – the ES350e (FWD) and ES500e (AWD) – deliver ranges of approximately 685 km and 610 km (CLTC mode) respectively. Lexus did not specify the size of the battery for the all-electric ES sedans, but did share some of the specifications.
Prototype Performance Figures:
- Output: Ranges from 145 kW to 252 kW
- Acceleration (0–100 km/h): As low as 5.9 seconds
- Charging Time (150 kW): 10–80% in approx. 30 minutes (25°C)

Exterior Styling and Design Language
Drawing inspiration from the LF-ZC concept, the new Lexus ES evolves the Lexus spindle design into a sleek “spindle body” form. The silhouette is marked by a flowing roofline, wider stance, and tapered rear cabin, designed for improved aerodynamics and visual presence.

Key Exterior Features:
- Twin L-signature LED lighting front and rear
- Flush surface transitions for aerodynamic efficiency
- Precision-placed wheels for enhanced stance
- New solid colour “SOU” for BEV models, offering subtle blue highlights
Modern Interior Experience
The cabin is designed as a space of relaxation, resembling a contemporary living room. It keeps what makes the Lexus ES special, but also improves on the package as a whole. Increased dimensions—165 mm longer overall and an 80 mm longer wheelbase—provide enhanced legroom and visibility.

Highlights Include:
- Dimmable panoramic roof with Low-E heat-insulating glass
- Rear relaxation seats with ottoman and massage functions
- Bamboo Layering, Modern Bamboo, and Micro Geometric interior trims
- Mark Levinson™ Surround Sound System
- Four interior colour options, including new “Aotake”
Cockpit and User Interface
Anchored around Lexus’s Tazuna Concept, the driver-focused cockpit features a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display with suede trim and a low-profile hood for improved forward visibility.

Advanced Features and Sensory Technology
The new ES debuts “Responsive Hidden Switches”—an innovative tactile interface that remains concealed until activated by proximity. This contributes to the minimalist and seamless cabin aesthetic.

The integrated Sensory Concierge adjusts lighting, scent, music, and seating to suit one of three modes: Inspire, Radiance, and Revitalize. Five signature scents, each featuring bamboo-derived elements, are dispersed via concealed cartridges.
Safety and Assistance Systems
Lexus Safety System+ Upgrades
The latest ES includes an expanded suite of active safety technologies under the updated Lexus Safety System+. New features offer broader detection coverage, improved pre-collision performance, and adaptive assistance in various driving conditions.
Notable Additions:
- Radar Cruise Control with Eco-Run and map-linked deceleration
- Enhanced Pre-Collision System (PCS) with wide-angle support
- Driver Emergency Support system and drowsiness monitoring
- Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) with refined vertical/lateral control
- Blind Spot Monitor with two-wheeler detection
- Panoramic View Monitor with 3D swipe functionality and transparency overlay
