Kia unveiled a range of new electric products and concepts at the Kia EV day, and the central focus was the market-ready version of the Kia EV4. It is the first non-SUV styled offering in this new-age Kia EV lineup as the EV4 gets sedan and hatch body style. Clearly, the EV4 sedan is aimed to take on the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal, while the EV4 hatch will be going up against the MG 4 and Cupra Born. Will the EV4 come to Australia? Yes, it will.
Design and features
The EV4 adopts Kia’s latest design language, incorporating aerodynamic elements from the brand’s existing EV lineup. Its low slung front end and wide stance give it an athletic presence. The sedan features an upswept tail with vertical LED taillights, while the hatchback showcases a more conventional rear with L-shaped lights and distinctive black roof trim. GT-Line variants will offer sportier “arrow shaped” bumpers and unique 19-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the EV4 is expected to mirror the EV3’s tech-focused cabin, featuring a 30-inch display that integrates a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, a 5.0-inch climate-control screen, and the 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. Notable additions include entertainment features such as integrated Netflix streaming and a built-in karaoke function. The interior layout has a primary focus on minimalist simplicity and spaciousness, complimented by the sliding centre console, light coloured cabin and various storage spaces. It’s got a sizeable boot too, with 490 litres of luggage space in the EV4 sedan and 435 litres for the hatch.
Performance and range
Built on Kia’s E-GMP platform, the EV4 features a 400-volt electrical system, similar to the EV3, rather than the faster-charging 800-volt system found in the EV6 and EV9.
The EV4 will be offered with two battery options: a 58.3kWh standard pack and an 81.4kWh long-range variant. The latter is expected to deliver up to 630km of driving range under the WLTP cycle.
Model | EV4 Sedan | EV4 Hatch |
Battery Size | 58.3 kWh/ 81.4 kWh | 58.3 kWh/ 81.4 kWh |
Claimed Range | 430km/ 630km | 410km/ 590km |
It is available in single-motor, front-wheel-drive configurations, delivering 150kW and 283Nm of torque. Kia states the EV4 sedan can do the 0-100km/h sprint in 7.4 seconds in standard form, 7.7 seconds with the larger and heavier long-range battery. While these are not particularly impressive figures, Kia claims it has put a lot of thought into the suspension to make sure the EV4 has dynamic cornering abilities. It even has an EV-specific McPherson strut design for the front suspension assembly with a multi-link set-up and coilovers at the rear.
A high-performance dual-motor all-wheel-drive version, rumored to produce 250kW and 470Nm, could also be in development.
Technology and safety
The Kia EV4 comes equipped with the brand’s latest suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, over-the-air software updates, and improved regenerative braking systems for increased convenience. Safety features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and autonomous emergency braking. While the EV4 is pending crash test scores, Kia is aiming for 5-star ratings across the board.
Production and availability
The Kia EV4 sedan will be produced in South Korea and is slated for a March 2025 launch. Meanwhile, the hatchback variant, manufactured in Slovakia, will be exclusive to the European market.
Although Kia Australia has confirmed the EV4’s arrival, it did not confirm which body type. Given that the hatch will be manufactured in Europe which would make it more expensive to bring it over than the EV4 sedan from Korea, the latter is likely to be the only one offered here. More details, including pricing and variant-wise specifications, are expected to be revealed closer to launch which is likely due towards the end of the year, or in early 2026.
