MG has officially revealed the next-generation MG 4 in China, showcasing a larger and more refined design for its popular electric hatchback. This announcement follows a recent leak via the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) database, which listed the model under multiple names, including MG 3 EV and MG E5. However, MG has now confirmed that the new model will retain the MG 4 nameplate and serve as the brand’s first global vehicle of 2025.
Bigger and more refined design
The 2026 MG 4 undergoes a complete styling overhaul, adopting a softer, more rounded design influenced by the MG Cyberster sports car. The new look is characterised by arrow-shaped tail-light internals, and a more aggressive front bumper.
According to the MIIT filing, the 2026 MG 4 now measures 4395mm in length, 1842mm in width, and 1551mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2750mm. Compared to the outgoing model, this represents an increase of 108mm in length, 6mm in width, 35mm in height, and 45mm in wheelbase, bringing it closer in dimensions to the Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3 hatchbacks.
The electric hatchback’s styling also bears similarities to the MG S5 electric SUV, which is expected to arrive in Australia between April and June 2025.

Powertrain and platform uncertainty
The MIIT database reveals that the 2026 MG 4 will feature a 120kW single electric motor powered by a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery of unspecified capacity. Interestingly, this marks a slight power drop from the current base MG 4 in Australia, which produces 125kW in its Excite 51 trim. Additionally, the new model appears to have shed weight, with a kerb mass of 1485kg, compared to the 1635kg of the outgoing entry-level variant.
The current Australian MG 4 lineup offers the following powertrains and battery packs:
Variant | Powertrain | Output (kW/Nm) | Battery Pack |
Excite 51 | Single-motor RWD | 125kW / 250Nm | 51kWh |
Excite 64 | Single-motor RWD | 150kW / 250Nm | 64kWh |
Essence 77 | Single-motor RWD | 180kW / 350Nm | 77kWh |
XPower | Dual-motor AWD | 320kW / 600Nm | 64kWh |
However, it remains unclear whether the new MG 4 will continue using MG’s Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), which underpins the existing MG 4, MG S5, and Cyberster. MG has yet to confirm if additional motor and battery configurations—such as the 300kW XPower setup—will be available in the new model.

Australian market plans uncertain
While the 2026 MG 4 has been officially revealed, its Australian launch remains unclear.
Despite slow sales in China—where only 13 MG 4 units were sold in February 2025—the model has been a strong performer in Australia. MG recorded 6934 MG 4 sales in 2024, a 121.3 per cent increase compared to 2023, making it Australia’s third best-selling EV, behind the Tesla Model Y and Model 3.
Pricing for the outgoing MG 4 starts at $34,888 drive-away in Australia. More details on the 2026 MG 4’s pricing, specifications, and interior features are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
