The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 Electric lands in Australia from $249,900, offering 432kW, 1164Nm, and a 567km range. Its quad-motor setup enables the unique G-TURN function for 360-degree spins. Arriving March 2025, it blends luxury, off-road prowess, and EV tech, undercutting the AMG G63 in price.

Electric power meets G-Class heritage

Featuring a quad-motor setup producing 432kW and 1164Nm of torque, the G580 surpasses the performance of the petrol-powered AMG G63 which makes 430kW and 860Nm from a twin-turbo V8.

The electric off-roader is more “affordable” as well, its starting price tag $119,000 less than that of the AMG G63. Plus, it also has the unique party trick called the “G-turn.”

Powertrain and performance

The Mercedes-Benz G580 is powered by four electric motors—one per wheel—each producing 108kW and 219Nm. This setup not only delivers bonkers output but also enables precise torque vectoring and off-road capabilities, including the ability to ‘tank-turn’ in place via its G-TURN function. This feature allows the G580 to ‘turn on the spot’ by rotating the wheels in opposite directions thanks to a motor-per-wheel, giving it the appearance of spinning like a top.

A massive 116kWh battery provides a claimed 567km of range under NEDC testing. Charging capabilities include 200kW DC fast charging, allowing a 10-80% recharge in approximately 32 minutes, and an 11kW AC charger for home charging.

Off-Road capability and design enhancements

Built on a ladder-frame chassis like its petrol and diesel siblings, the G580 retains the rugged DNA of the G-Class. Mercedes states an 850mm wading depth—150mm deeper than the internal combustion models—and can tackle 45-degree slopes. Traditional differential locks have been replaced by an advanced torque distribution system, ensuring optimal traction on challenging terrains.

While staying true to its classic design, the G580 features subtle aerodynamic refinements, including revised rear wheel arches, a redesigned bonnet, and an optional blank-panel grille. The rear-mounted spare wheel is replaced by a charger-carrying ‘backpack,’ though a spare remains an option in certain markets.

Interior and technology

The G580’s cabin is not dissimilar to that of the regular G-Class, continuing the essence of robust luxury and adventuring in comfort. It features twin 12.3-inch digital displays running the latest MBUX infotainment system. Standard features include Burmester 3D surround sound, a Nappa leather steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, and wireless smartphone charging. Advanced driver assistance features and an OFF-ROAD COCKPIT display, showing gradient, tyre pressure, and compass readings, further enhance its capability.

Limited-edition model and optional packages

To mark the launch, Mercedes-Benz will offer a special Edition One variant, priced at $299,000. This exclusive model includes unique colour options, blue brake callipers, black 20-inch wheels, and a high-end Nappa leather interior with blue accents.

Additional personalisation options include:

  • Night Package ($4,300): Black exterior elements and darkened lamps.
  • Black Panel Grille ($3,800): Illuminated blank-panel grille.
  • Superior Line Interior Plus ($14,500): Diamond-stitched Nappa leather and multicontour seats.
  • Manufaktur Exterior Package ($4,100): Gloss black roof, bumpers, and wheel arches.
  • Interior Comfort Package ($8,500): Rear-seat entertainment and heated steering wheel.

Pricing in Australia

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 is priced from $249,000 before on-road costs, making it the most affordable G-Class variant since the diesel-powered G400d in 2022. It significantly undercuts the V8-powered AMG G63, which starts at $368,000. Meanwhile, the limited-run Edition One variant commands a $50,000 premium.

ModelPrice (Excl. On-Road Costs)
G580$249,000
G580 Edition One$299,000

Arrival and availability

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology will arrive in Australian showrooms in March 2025, with Edition One models leading the launch. With its blend of electric power, off-road capability, and luxury, the G580 offers a compelling alternative to traditional combustion-powered G-Class models. Much like the iconic G-wagen, there is no direct competitor to the electric G580. But if you’re looking for a luxury EV with an impressive history, keep an eye out for the all-electric Range Rover.
