Ford Australia has confirmed pricing and specifications for the 2025 Ford Ranger which will include the Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) variants, with deliveries for those expected to commence mid-year. Positioned above its diesel-powered counterparts in terms of cost, the Ranger PHEV will offer enhanced technology, a hybrid powertrain, and additional features designed to broaden the Ranger’s appeal in the evolving ute segment.
Pricing and model grades
The 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV will be available across four model grades, only in the double-cab pickup body style:
Ranger PHEV variant | Price excluding govt. charges |
XLT PHEV 4×4 double-cab | $71,990 |
Sport PHEV 4×4 double-cab | $75,990 |
Wildtrak PHEV 4×4 double-cab | $79,990 |
Stormtrak PHEV 4×4 double-cab | $86,990 |
This places the PHEV variants between $3150 and $4650 above equivalent V6 diesel models and $8350 to $9850 more than bi-turbo diesel four-cylinder grades. Earlier estimates suggested a premium of up to $15,000, making these confirmed prices lower than expected.
The PHEV is subject to a 5% import tariff, as it is built in South Africa rather than Thailand, where other Ranger variants are produced.
Here’s the pricing for the rest of the variants of the 2025 Ford Ranger:
Ranger Variant | Price range (before on-road costs) | Single-turbo diesel | Bi-turbo diesel | V6 diesel |

The top-of-the-line Ranger Raptor with the 3-litre EcoBoost V6 carries a price tag of $90,440 (before on-roads).
Comparison with hybrid competitors
Even though the Ranger PHEV carries a lower premium over the diesel options than expected, it still sits at a higher price point than its key plug-in hybrid competitors.
PHEV Ute | Ford Ranger PHEV | BYD Shark 6 | GWM Cannon Alpha |
Starting price | $71,990 (plus on-roads) | $57,900 (plus on-roads) | $63,990 (drive-away) |
It is worth noting that the Ranger PHEV will arrive after the March 2025 exemption cut-off for Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) on low-emission vehicles, potentially reducing its appeal for fleet and novated lease buyers.
Powertrain and performance

The Ford Ranger PHEV combines a 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a 75kW electric motor, delivering combined outputs of 207kW and 697Nm. It comes mated to a 10-speed automatic sending power to all four wheels with an 11.8kWh battery pack for a zero-emission range of up to 48km based on WLTP testing. Let’s see how the Ranger PHEV specs compare to the usual powertrains:

Unlike the BYD Shark 6, which primarily uses its electric motors for propulsion, the Ranger PHEV’s petrol engine drives the wheels, with the electric motor providing additional assistance.

Drive modes include Auto EV, EV Now, EV Later, and EV Charge, allowing drivers to select their preferred balance between petrol and electric power.

Towing and load capacity
Ford lists the Ranger PHEV’s braked towing capacity at 3500kg, matching diesel variants and exceeding the BYD Shark 6’s 2500kg. Payload varies between 808kg and 973kg, depending on the model grade. This is approximately 200kg higher than competitors, including the BYD Shark 6 and GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV.
The tray length exceeds 1600mm, accommodating two European pallets, and a Pro Power Onboard system offers internal and external power outlets for running tools and appliances directly from the vehicle’s battery.
Chassis and off-road systems
The four-wheel-drive system is shared with the V6 diesel Rangers, including a full-time mode, low-range transfer case, and locking rear differential. Ford highlighted its capability for off-road driving, indirectly referencing issues reported with the BYD Shark 6 in challenging terrain.
Design and specification changes
Externally, the PHEV gains a charging port on the rear-left wheel arch and wider wheels with unique designs to accommodate the increased weight. Other modifications include new lip mouldings and different tyres.

The XLT PHEV differs from the diesel XLT by omitting LED headlights, lane centring, and traffic-sign recognition, though it gains a 12-inch touchscreen. The Wildtrak PHEV includes features from the optional Premium Pack, such as matrix LED headlights and a 10-speaker B&O audio system, while auxiliary switches remain an optional extra.
At the top of the range, the Stormtrak special edition adds unique styling elements, Chill Grey paint, and includes both the Flexible Rack sliding sports bar and Technology Pack as standard.
