A selection of Mazda BT-50 utes have been recalled due to a fault in the rear suspension that could put drivers at risk.

‘Due to a manufacturing defect, the left leaf spring bracket may have been insufficiently welded and could crack resulting in a loss of vehicle control.’ mentioned the press release.

According to the official release, 912 units of the Mazda BT-50 are included in the recall for this fault. In comparison, Mazda reportedly sold over 15,000 units of the BT-50 ute in the previous year and the 2024 units are still available in runout stock.

A loss of vehicle control will increase the risk of an accident which may cause injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users. Mazda’s response when asked about the hazards of this engineering oversight.

There was a much bigger recall for the BT-50 back in August 2024 because of a fault that affected units powered by the 3-litre turbo-diesel engine. Although the BT-50 is not nearly as popular as utes like the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, these recalls are not going to help Mazda attract more buyers to increase its share of the segment.

Mazda BT-50 was tested in 2022 and was awarded a 5-star ANCAP rating. The rating was valid till December of 2028. However, given the recent turmoil Mazda has found itself in, we can expect a significant drop in the sales figure of the new Mazda BT-50.
Mazda will be contacting owners of the affected vehicles to schedule an appointment to have leaf spring bracket inspected and replaced, free of charge. You can also check the published list of affected utes by their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to try and see if your BT-50 is included in the recall.
