The Ford Mustang is known for its V8 engine, but in Australia a 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbo is also offered.
Plus there's the choice of a coupe (hard top) body or the cruisier (and heavier) convertible.
Performance from the four-pot is thoroughly respectable, but it lacks one crucial muscle car ingredient: noise.
Little wonder, then, that most buyers splashed out extra for the V8, which is the classic Ford 5.0-litre capacity. The raucous sound and raw performance perfectly match the solid stance of the Mustang, which is suitably available in a range of often head-turning colours. It’s those cars that wear the legendary GT badge.
A digital instrument cluster was one of the features added as part of the 2018 update, which also ushered in bonnet scoops and a revised exhaust. Mmm, more noise!
More performance, too, although the Mustang’s talents are more about making some noise and accelerating fast. While it hangs on admirably in bends, it’s no lithe two-door.
As well as the regular models Ford has also rolled out various limited edition models, including the Bullitt that celebrated the legendary car chase scene in the Steve McQueen hit of 1968.
There’s also been faster supercharged versions and the Mach 1, all of which keeps the Mustang lovers coming back for more.
