Used Car Sales In Australia August 2024 - Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux Top The Charts
The total number of used cars sold in Australia in August 2024 dropped by 3.6 per cent compared to July 2024, even though the number of used cars listed for sale rose by 4.9 percent. These figures have been revealed in the Automotive Insights Report (AIR) for August 2024 collated by the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) and AutoGrab.
As per the AIR for the previous month, 206,804 used cars were sold compared to 214,588 in July 2024, with private sellers accounting for 62.1 percent of this tally. It also stated that the decline was witnessed across all states except Tasmania and South Australia. These figures include passenger vehicles, SUVs, utes and light commercial vehicles (LCV) but excludes vehicles older than 15 years and write-offs.

Utes were the top choices for used car buyers last month, with the Ford Ranger outselling the Toyota HiLux, followed by the Toyota Corolla. The Camry was the best-selling used sedan followed closely by the RAV4 mid-size SUV. Two more utes among these top-sellers are the Mitsubishi Triton and Nissan Navara, while the rest are SUVs and hatchbacks.

The drop in used car sales can be observed across all body types. When it comes to the buyer preference based on fuel-type, hybrids have seen a small rise in month-on-month demand of 0.6 percent while 8.9 percent more LPG models were picked up. The demand for petrol and diesel used cars dropped by 3.7 percent and 3.9 percent respectively, while the popularity of used EVs fell by 8.3 percent. It is worth noting that EVs only accounted for 1,637 units of the used cars sold in Australia last month.
‘Despite the increase in supply, the average days to sell have continued to decrease, reaching a new low of 42.7 over the past 12 months, indicating sellers are motivated and buyers are ready to snap up a good deal’, according to the AIR August 2024.
