Australia’s new car market witnessed sales of 98,328 units across passenger vehicles, SUVs, and light and heavy commercial vehicles in August 2024. This tally is based on VFACTS data published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), the peak body for new car makers in Australia. This figure is 10.6 percent lower than the tally for August 2023 and slightly lower than previous month’s sales figure as well.

Let’s see who were the top performers in the Australian new car market for August 2024, starting with the most popular models:

Rank Make/ Model Sales
1 Toyota RAV4 6,712
2 Ford Ranger 5,431
3 Toyota HiLux 4,496
4 Isuzu Ute D-Max 2,548
5 Toyota LandCruiser 2,504

The midsize SUV from Toyota was the most popular new car last month, with a comfortable margin over the next highest selling cars of August 2024. In terms of utes, the Ford Ranger was the top choice while the Toyota HiLux was around 1,000 units behind. The Isuzu Ute D-Max and the Toyota Landcruiser sold more units than the next highest selling car, with a little over 2,500 each. According to the FCAI report, the sales of battery electric vehicles is matching the global downward trend, despite multiple price reductions from the top players.

Rank Make/ Model August 2024 Sales
1 Toyota 21,490
2 Ford 8,890
3 Mazda 8,263
4 Kia 6,903
5 Hyundai 6,211

Toyota continues to be the dominant car brand in Australia with a hefty margin over Ford. Meanwhile, Mazda is not far behind the blue oval in terms of new car sales with its portfolio of family-oriented SUVs. Kia and Hyundai both enjoyed sales of over 6,000 units in August 2024 but the former led by a margin of almost 700 sales.

Sales By Segment August 2024 % Of Sales
Passenger 15,166 15.4%
SUV 56,541 57.5%
Light Commercial 22,496 22.9%
Heavy Commercial 4,125 4.2%
Total 98,328 100%

The passenger car market in Australia is experiencing the biggest drop in demand, down by 21.6 percent over the same month last year. While all segments are collectively witnessing a decline on account for lower August 2024 sales than August 2023 sales, the light and heavy commercial vehicles sales have gone up compared to July 2024 sales. Demand for SUVs that account for more than half the new car sales is relatively similar to last month’s figures.

There has been a global slowdown for new cars, especially battery electric vehicles. We can expect to see a similar trend for buyers in Australia as well. However, there is an upside for consumers as prices for EVs will likely continue to drop in the short term, so if you’ve been holding back on that new car purchase, this might be a good time to explore your options.
