Pros

  • Good refinement
  • Low running costs
  • Great interior quality and space

Cons

  • As far as family members are considering this car, the Kia Sportage hybrid is a far more attractive alternative.
  • Prices have risen compared to the previous Kia Niro hybrid.
  • Hybrid and PHEV have smaller boot than the electric Kia Niro.

What’s new?

  • A jump in the starting price
  • Interior upgrade
  • Upholstery options

The main rivals to the Kia Niro hybrid are the Ford Escape Hybrid, Chevrolet Bolt EUV, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, and Honda CR-V i-MMD. While the Toyota RAV4 has a great advantage of Toyota legacy and low maintenance, Kia has outdone itself to create a true blue option for those looking to purchase a Toyota RAV4.

Variant Price Fuel Efficiency Fuel Type
Kia Niro S $44,930 4.0 L/100km Petrol-Hyd
Kia Niro GT Line $50,580 4.0 L/100km Petrol-Hyd

Exteriors

Styling Elements

Kia has always outdone itself in creating newer and more appealing exterior designs. As we saw in the new Kia Carnival review, Kia Niro hybrid is right up there to match the stakes. The Kia Niro hybrid has LED DRLs and partial LED tail lights in the back. The entry-level Kia Niro Hybrid S variant doesn’t have privacy glass but the Kia Niro Hybrid GT Line has them. There are some piano black accent plates on both the variants of Kia Niro hybrid.

The front grille is particularly minimalistic with the lower end having multiple air inlets. However, the top end of the front grille is just simple with a chrome accent traversing the entire front end upon which sits the new Kia logo. The new Kia logo is just a single-stroke machined finish lettering which looks far more posh than the old button insignia.

Colour Options

The Kia Niro hybrid has two variants. Unlike what we’ll notice is quite a discriminatory approach towards many things, colour options are something that is standard in the entire Kia Hybrid range.

Single Tone Colours

Clear White | Snow White Pearl | Steel Grey | Interstellar Grey | Aurora Black Pearl | Mineral Blue | Runaway Red | Cityscape Green

Two Tone Colours

  • Snow White Pearl with Steel Grey in C-Pillar and Cladding
  • Mineral Blue with Gloss Black in C-Pillar
  • Cityscape Green with Gloss Black in C-Pillar

Wheel Design

The wheel designs of the Kia Niro hybrid are quite pristine. They have a two-toned machine finish, which makes it quite futuristic but also gives it a very demanding and aggressive character. The Kia Niro hybrid S and the Kia Niro hybrid GT Line have two different wheel sizes and they’re not upgradable. Following are the wheel options.

  • 16-inch alloy wheel. Two tones single spoke machined edge finish in the Kia Niro hybrid S variant
  • 18-inch alloy wheel. Two-tone honeycomb design with machine finish in the Kia Niro hybrid GT Line variant.

The Kia Niro has a standard wheel size for its EV counterpart however, the jump from 16-inch to 18-inch will be easily discernable and will make quite an impact on the overall ride quality.

Interiors

Interior Layout & Space

The interior of the Kia Niro hybrid is the main reason you should invest in this car. The car essentially makes a statement about what it has under the hood and inside the doors. The Kia Niro interiors are particularly minimalistic but with loads of features cleverly placed in order to maximise use without restricting movements. The padding on the dashboard and the door handles are soft and comfortable.

A great thing about the Kia Niro interiors is that while there is a touchscreen which essentially takes care of everything for you, there is a different control panel for easy accessibility. This way you don’t have to worry about tapping multiple times just to alter the temperature. All that and more can be controlled by the sleek-looking control panel, right under the touchscreen.

The gear toggle compartment is also neatly designed and placed which edges a bit to the driver for easy control without being too distracted. The way it is designed and labelled, it seems to be this car also fo learning and novice drivers.

Comfort & Ergonomics

The seats of the Kia Niro hybrid are exceptionally comfortable and help you at ease even on longer journeys. The front row is entirely electrically adjustable. However, the Kia Niro hybrid S variant has manually adjustable passenger seats. It's not a deal breaker, honestly.

Apart from that the seats are ventilated and heated in order to maximise your comfort and convenience. Overall, both variants perform wonderfully in the comfort and ergonomics department. The Kia Niro hybrid S and Kia Niro hybrid GT Line come with two different upholstery options;

  • Charcoal Cloth & Artificial Leather - Seat Trim(Kia Niro Hybrid S)
  • Charcoal Artificial Leather - Seat Trim (Perforated Bio PU) (Kia Niro Hybrid GT Line)

Boot

The 425 litres of boot space is quite generous considering the hybrid variant. The electric motor underneath the rear end doesn’t take as much space as to compromise the boot space as we’ve seen in Toyota hybrid cars. The second-row collapses which provides you somewhere over 1000 litres of boot space. However, Kia does not provide an accurate figure for the same. The good thing about collapsing the second row is that the seats fold entirely providing you a flat bed.

Technology & Infotainment

Kia is known to make exciting new technology and ladle them in the cars they make. Kia Niro hybrid also follows suit and gets an exciting list of technology and connectivity features.

Performance & Engine

The Kia Niro hybrid just comes with one engine option as it is the standard for now. However, companies like Mazda and Toyota are working on providing multiple hybrid engine options and we should see a bigger shift to hybrid engines in the upcoming years.

Engine Specifications

Variant Power Torque Engine Configuration
Kia Niro S 139 Bhp 170 Nm 1.6i/104kW Hybrid
Kia Niro GT Line 139 Bhp 170 Nm 1.6i/104kW Hybrid

Transmission & Drive System

The Kia Niro hybrid comes in just 2WD and that would be a Front wheel drive. The transmission is mated right under the hood to a 6 6-speed sports automatic dual-clutch. Now the great thing about the transmission is that it has an excellent pick-up however, going 60km/h for a while, we noticed the engine started to drone on. Apart from that the transmission is good and healthy, with no otherworldly noises from it which makes the Kia Niro hybrid a smooth sailing ship.

Fuel Economy & Efficiency

The 1.6 litre GDI engine is quite well built to balance the electric motor and work well in tandem. Overall hybrids are preferred for their low fuel economy and Kia Niro hybrid just raises the stake to around 4 litres of gas requirement for every 100 kilometres which is extremely attractive especially if you are a family of more than 4 members and have to constantly juggle between school drop-offs and other lessons, recitals, performances etc. The tank capacity of the Kia Niro hybrid is 42 litres, so yes even the tank size in particularly considerate.

Handling & Driving Dynamics

The handling of the Kia Niro hybrid is particularly smooth and crisp. The car doesn’t jitter when on sine waves. Ofcourse it isn’t made to be taken off-road and while the Kia Niro takes potholes and crevices pretty seriously, the suspension system does seem to fall short. The Kia Sportage hybrid shows some real promise and fills in the blanks that the Kia Niro hybrid is unable to.

Safety Features

The Kia Niro hybrid is an exceptionally tuned to safety car. Given its low running cost, extensive safety list of passive and active safety features, and overall good vibes, this is a great family car or decent urban farer for those youngsters who want to create chaos and not break curfew.

Ownership Experience

The ownership experience of the 2024 Kia Niro Hybrid is characterised by a harmonious blend of efficiency, comfort, and modernity. Owners revel in its smooth and responsive hybrid powertrain, delivering impressive fuel economy without compromising performance. The Niro's sleek exterior design and well-appointed interior create an inviting atmosphere for both driver and passengers, while its advanced technology features such as smartphone integration and driver-assistance systems enhance convenience and safety on every journey. With Kia's reputation for reliability and a comprehensive warranty package, owning the Niro Hybrid instils confidence and satisfaction, making it an exceptional choice for eco-conscious drivers seeking a dynamic and enjoyable driving experience.

Major Drawbacks

  • The ISOFIX point is a bit hard to reach and locate. It makes tethering a seat a time-consuming activity and for new parents a bit more than an ideal placement of the tether points.
  • The middle-level steering position which is the most common among tall people has a drawback. It restricts visibility on the speedometer.
  • On erratic surfaces the Kia Niro hybrid gear system thuds a bit more than it should, the cabin is quite but still you feel that thudding.

Major Strengths

  • The space in the back is more than generous. Even the taller ones can sit comfortably without their knee being pushed against the front seat or their head being capped off by the ceiling. The spaciousness is just too good.
  • Big vanity mirrors, aeroplane-style seat pockets, the boot rack which is easily removable. These small thoughtful features are a testament to how consumer-centric the entire ride is.
  • The Satelite Navigation is developed in a way wherein whenever it detects a school or a hospital, the Kia Niro Hybrid engine is entirely shut off and switches to the electric motor in order to minimise emissions when near public places.

Maintenance & Warranty Information

Kia cars enjoy an extremely comprehensive warranty and maintenance of upto Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile’ warranty program.. Following are the key points of the warranty Kia cars enjoy.

  • 5-year/60,000 mile limited basic warranty
  • 5-year/100,000 mile limited anti-perforation warranty
  • 5-year/60,000 mile roadside assistance plan
  • 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty

Kia, to improve customer satisfaction, has capped the service price for 7 years. As long as the service is maintained and the logbook reflects the same, the warranty is effective as well. In addition, you can drive into any Kia-authorised dealer and get your car serviced without the fear of any hidden charges. Read more about the Kia warranty and maintenance plans here.

Verdict

Well that was our review of the Kia Niro Hybrid. To put it in short, the Kia Sportage is  far better alternative. However, if you have budget restraints then Kia Niro Hybrid is just as great as an option. The driving experience isn’t particularly thrilling but does manage to create an atmosphere of ease and comfort within. The interiors of the Kia Niro hybrid are immaculate. The driver as well as the passenger get loads of features which makes the Niro an attractive choice.
