Isuzu D-MAX was Australia’s third best-selling vehicle in 2023. With the launch date of 1st May 2024, Isuzu D-MAX 2024 is all set for a new launch of the MY24 version. Isuzu claims that it has taken media and consumer feedback under consideration and the new changes will be more inclusive of the results. Isuzu claims that the new interior design and upholstery has been influenced by the Japanese paper-folding art of Miura Origami.

Following is what the Isuzu UTE Australia Managing Director, Junta Matsui has to say about Isuzu D-MAX 2024.

“As one of Australia’s top-selling vehicles, the D-MAX represents exceptional value for money and with the addition of some new safety features, it is once again one of Australia’s safest vehicles on sale with segment-leading standardised safety features on every single model - from the entry-level SX to the flagship X-TERRAIN."

“Not only does the 2024 D-MAX feature specifications bespoke to the Australian market but the design changes have also been influenced by the very feedback we’ve received from the media and customers over the past three years - improving one of Australia’s favourite vehicles to make it even more appealing and competitive.”

Cons

  • The cheaper variants are far more economical than the upper-level variants.
  • Build quality isn’t great

Isuzu D-MAX 2024 competes with some of the heavyweights in the segment like the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara and so many more. It's safe to say that being amongst the safest isn’t going to cut it in this category, it needs to be functional, it needs to be impactful and most of all, smooth. Keep on reading the Isuzu D-Max review for more information.

Styling Elements

Okay, Isuzu D-Max 2024 has made some minor updates to the front grille which makes it look sharp. There isn’t a very discernable difference between the front grilles of the previous iteration vs. the new one but upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that the grille blades are now slimmer and the overall aesthetic of the front grille may want to make you use the word ‘slender’. There are some air inlets under the Isuzu logo which has now been further compressed.

The headlight cluster is quite contained to one place, I don’t know about you but I personally prefer my headlights contained and not scattered into 3 stages. The headlights are fully LED with LED DRLs overarching. What I noted about the cluster distastefully is that the indicator is on the inside of headlights, functionally speaking, they would make so much more sense had they been on the outside. The rear headlight cluster is a bit different from the older version, just more contained and narrowed. It still has partial LED rear lights and the remainder is incandescent globes in the name of indicators which are properly placed, thankfully!

Colour Options

Isuzu D-MAX 2024 is offered to the consumers in alot of colour options. However, the embossing of matte, gloss and pearlescent is not available in the lower-level variant which is also a fixable problem for a small fee. Infact, apart from some colours of the X-Terrain, all colours can be afforded for a minimal fee of $650. Here are the colour options the Isuzu D-MAX 2024 is offered in;

Colours of Isuzu D-MAX 2024 LS-U & LS-M - Basalt Black Mica | Mercury Silver Metallic | Mineral White | Neptune Blue Mica | Obsidian Grey Mica

Extra Colours for Isuzu D-MAX 2024 LS-U+ inlcude - Moonstone White Pearl | Magnetic Red Mica

Extra Colours for Isuzu D-MAX 2024 X-Terrain include - Granite Grey Mica | Mercury Silver Metallic | Volcanic Amber Metallic

Wheel Design

The wheel design of the Isuzu D-MAX 2024 is quite variant-specific. However, a good and bad thing is that all variants have a standard full-size spare tyre. The full-size spare tyre, however, is a metallic one, even for those cars with alloy wheels. Following are the variants of Isuzu D-MAX with their variant sizes.

  • Isuzu D-MAX 2024 SX - 17-inch steel wheels with a silver finish and all-terrain tyres.
  • Isuzu D-MAX 2024 LS-M - 17-inch alloy wheels with silver finish and all-terrain tyres.
  • Isuzu D-MAX 2024 LS-U & LS-U+ - 18-inch alloy wheels with highway-terrain tyres and machine finish.
  • Isuzu D-MAX 2024 X-Terrain - 18-inch alloy wheels with highway terrain tyres and matte dark grey finish.

Interiors

Interior Layout & Space

Inside the Isuzu D-Max 2024, the overall feel of the cabin is quite good, there are ample soft-touch surfaces across the cabin, even on the dashboard, which is always nice. It isn’t necessary to cushion up the dashboard but it reflects upon the thinking of the manufacturer in terms of comfort for the consumer.

I particularly liked the infotainment screen placement and how the air vents complement it. This gives it a very winged aesthetic to the entire cluster. Speaking of clusters, there is a cluster on both sides of the toggle stick which are blank buttons, even in the top-spec Isuzu D-MAX 2024, these buttons don’t have a purpose.

The second row in the Crew Cab variant has ample space for your ‘crew’ to not cramp in. It can accommodate upto 3 people comfortably. However, there is a bit of a knee room restriction, but overall great.

The Space Cab variant is somewhat of a nightmare given that there is minimal to no space in the back. An average-sized adult over 5ft10in is not going to be comfortable within the space cab. My suggestion is unless and until you don’t absolutely have to take the Space Cab variant, run from it.

Comfort & Ergonomics

The Isuzu D-MAX 2024 has extremely comfortable seats. Every variant gets a dedicated leather touch or leather-accented upholstery which is perforated and in some variants heated and ventilated. This allows the Isuzu D-MAX 2024 to be a perfect companion to be off-roading with or going on long journeys with.

  • Isuzu D-MAX 2024 SX - Standard Black Cloth
  • Isuzu D-MAX 2024 LS-M &  LS-U - High-grade Cloth
  • Isuzu D-MAX 2024 LS-U+ - Leather Accented
  • Isuzu D-MAX 2024 X-Terrain - Leather Accented with Red Stitching

Loading Bay

We settle on a torsion bar usually, but Isuzu has gone ahead and given us a hydraulic bar for the payload door. This is very exciting and honestly a breath of fresh air. Even the Ford Ranger, which is amongst my favourite ute also give us a torsion bar. This is a nice upgrade.

Talking about the dimensions of the bay, the payload bay is 1570mm in length, 1530mm in width & 1122mm in width between the wheel arches. So overall quite the competitive dimension on the payload bay.

The Isuzu D-MAX 2024 has a payload capacity of 990kgs which is just a bit over than what you get in a Ford Ranger.

Technology & Infotainment

In the technology department, the Isuzu D-MAX 2024 both disappoints and impresses the customers. While there is a new list of specifications which include the Intelligent Driver Assistance Systems, there are some features like wireless charging which is downright missing from the ute.

Technology Features

  • Dual-zone climate control air-conditioning with integrated heater/demister
  • Pollen and Fine Particle Air Filter
  • Comfort turn signal
  • Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • Electro-luminescent gauges
  • "Terrain Command" in the Isuzu D-Max 4x4 select dial
  • Rear Differential Lock Button
  • 4.4-inch Smart MID with Digital Speedometer
  • Voice Recognition

Connectivity Options

  • Built-in satellite navigation with MID-turn-by-turn directions
  • 6 & 4 speaker sound system
  • "Sky Sound" roof-mounted sound system with 8 speakers
  • 9 & 7-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Rear centre console USB charging port
  • AM/FM
  • DAB+
  • Digital Radio

Performance & Engine

The Isuzu D-MAX 2024 comes with 2 engine options. One is a 3-litre turbo diesel engine which generates 187 Bhp of power and 450 Nm of torque. Another one is the 1.9-litre turbo diesel engine which generates 147 Bhp of power and 350 Nm of torque.

Engine Specifications

Isuzu D-Max 4X4 Variant Power Torque Engine Configuration
X-Terrain 187 Bhp 450 Nm 4cyl 3.0L Turbo Diesel
LS-U+ Crew Cab 187 Bhp 450 Nm 4cyl 3.0L Turbo Diesel
LS-U Crew Cab 187 Bhp 450 Nm 4cyl 3.0L Turbo Diesel
LS-U Space Cab 187 Bhp 450 Nm 4cyl 3.0L Turbo Diesel
LS-M Crew Cab 187 Bhp 450 Nm 4cyl 3.0L Turbo Diesel
SX Crew Cab 187 Bhp 450 Nm 4cyl 3.0L Turbo Diesel
SX Crew Cab (1.9L) 147 Bhp 350 Nm 4cyl 1.9L Turbo Diesel

4X2 Variant Power Torque Engine Configuration
LS-U Crew Cab 187 Bhp 450 Nm 4cyl 3.0L Turbo Diesel
SX Crew Cab 187 Bhp 450 Nm 4cyl 3.0L Turbo Diesel
SX Crew Cab (1.9L) 147 Bhp 350 Nm 4cyl 1.9L Turbo Diesel

Transmission & Drive System

While there are no drive modes or sports modes for the Isuzu D-MAX 2024, there isn’t much to talk about the transmission. The 3-litre and 1.9-litre turbo diesel engine comes mated with a 6-speed sports automatic transmission.

However, we noted that the transmission set-up is a bit slow to respond at high speeds. Makes me wonder what happens after 12 months of rugged use.

Even though Isuzu has made some alterations to the suspension geometry to ensure smooth transmission to provide smoother on-road feel, it feels like driving a pre 2018 ute, very traditional.

Braking System

Fuel Economy & Efficiency

The Isuzu D-MAX is a bit creative in terms of fuel economy. Ofcourse, the real-time economy of any car varies upon the driving circumstances, terrain and driving practices which vary from driver to driver. So both the base-level variants with 1.9-litre turbo diesel engines provide the best economy which is around 6.9 litres for every 100 km in the Isuzu D-Max 4X4 variant and 6.7 litres for every 100 km in the 4x2 variant.

As you climb up the variant chart you’ll see that the 4x2 SX crew cab variant has an economy of 7.7 litres for every 100km which is the last fluctuation in the economy aspect.

Apart from that each and every variant of the Isuzu D-MAX provides an economy of 8 litres of gas for every 100 km.

Handling & Driving Dynamics

The D-MAX achieves most of the things that Isuzu claims it would. It definitely is one of the better utes to invest in in terms of towing. The 450 Nm of torque while might not be at par with the competitors the overall weight of the vehicle is lighter than most which allows it to tow extremely efficiently. It also has a very itchy trigger. Which means that it doesn’t do alot by its own but as you start pressing on it, the D-MAX just ups and goes to adventure. Drivers with a bit of experience would appreciate a ute such as the D-MAX, however those who are a bit more reliant on the car doing most of the work might take some time getting used to it.

The steering is particularly light no over-the-top tuning done to it in order to make it responsive, Isuzu has stuck to the traditional ways and allowed the driver to drive the ute instead of things going the other way around.

Safety Features

Safety features of Isuzu D-Max are quite comprehensive, most of these features are effective while towing and more importantly, off-roading. Major problems with safety features with utes is that their safety problems get triggered prematurely which isn’t present in the D-MAX

  • 8 SRS Airbags
  • 4-channel 4-sensor Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
  • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Emergency Brake Assist (EBA)
  • Hill Start Assist (HSA)
  • Hill Descent Control (HDC)
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
  • Intelligent Speed Limiter
  • Manual Speed Limiter
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Lane Departure Prevention (LDP)
  • Side anti-intrusion bars inside all doors

Advanced Safety Features

  • Turn Assist with AEB
  • Post-Collision Braking
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
  • Misacceleration Mitigation (*AT models only)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop and Go functionality (*AT models only)
  • Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)
  • Lane Keep Assist (LKA) (*AT models only)
  • Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK)
  • Lane Support System (LSS) Switch
  • Driver Attention Assist
  • Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM)
  • High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) fuel tank
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
  • BSM/RCTA Auto Switch Off

Crash Test Ratings

The Isuzu D-MAX has been awarded a 5-star safety rating from ANCAP. The test was conducted in July 2022 and the rating expires in December 2028. All variants of the D-MAX are included in the report, including the X-Terrain variant.

  • Adult Occupant Protection - 86%
  • Child Occupant Protection - 89%
  • Vulnerable Road User Protection - 69%
  • Safety Assist - 84%

Ownership Experience

Owning an Isuzu D-MAX can be a satisfying experience for drivers seeking a reliable and capable workhorse. Its robust build quality and strong diesel engine make it ideal for hauling heavy loads, towing trailers, or tackling demanding jobs. The comfortable cabin offers ample space for passengers and cargo, making it suitable for both work and weekend adventures. Additionally, the D-MAX's reputation for excellent fuel efficiency, especially for a ute, translates to lower running costs. However, there are some aspects to consider. The interior, while functional, might feel slightly utilitarian compared to some competitors, with a focus on durability over plush materials. The infotainment system might be considered basic by tech-savvy users. While the ride is decent, it might not be as smooth as some car-based SUVs, especially when unloaded. Overall, owning an Isuzu D-MAX prioritises practicality and dependability. If you value a comfortable work ute with low running costs, the D-MAX is a strong contender. But those seeking a luxurious interior, cutting-edge technology, or a smoother ride on unloaded journeys might want to explore other options in the ute market.

Major Drawbacks

  • The rear vision camera is very grainy. In 2024, if someone is investing upwards of $50,000, the least they’ll expect out of it is to get a standard camera.
  • No wireless phone charging which feels a missed opportunity in the technology department.
  • It doesn’t feel sporty at all. Whatsoever.

Major Strengths

  • Alot of diverse and functional storage options within the cabin. Practical and concealed storage options which don’t ruin the overall aesthetic of the cabin.
  • There are more hidden storage spaces within the second row under the seats.
  • The customer feedback accommodation is commendable, given that they’ve allowed the RCTA and BSM to be switched off which makes towing a comfortable experience and not having your alarms blaring constantly.
  • The suspension is very well tuned, when taking the car to bumpy roads on high speeds, it doesn't make the cabin jitter.

Maintenance & Warranty Information

Every Isuzu car comes with a comprehensive warranty list. A comprehensive bumper-to-bumper warranty of 6 years or 150,000km warranty, whichever comes first. Additionally, Isuzu offers a 7-year roadside assistance program for all its consumers which comes in handy more often than not for novice drivers.

If you opt for the Service Plus Driving Report, Isuzu will personally inspect your vehicle and driving type in order to give you a comprehensive report on the necessary maintenance schedules which will help you make the most of your Isuzu.

The best for last, Isuzu offers a flat 5-year flat price servicing which essentially means its capped service costs for ease of mind and further clarity and transparency of maintenance costs for the Isuzu. Take a look;

Service Interval Timeframe Capped Price Service
3,000 km 3 Months Free of Charge
15,000 km 12 Months / 1 Year $449
30,000 km 24 Months / 2 Years $449
45,000 km 36 Months / 3 Years $449
60,000 km 48 Months / 4 Years $449
75,000 km 60 Months / 5 Years $449

Verdict

For a company that just makes two cars, both of which are off-road capable, they sure do miss out on some important features while trying to justify these cars to be urban-friendly cars with unnecessary features. The traction control is one of the most disliked elements of the D-MAX which causes alot of terrains to be avoided almost immediately. There is another hindrance of using the differential lock on the 4-wheel drive ow range which makes navigating through muddy rocks a headache no one wants. I guess Isuzu has solved problems about the ute coming from consumers, however, I think they’ve only solved for problems which one faces while driving a ute within the city. They need to remember that off-roading is an essential part of owning a ute. While the towing capacity is something that I’m personally a fan of and the engine is particularly efficient. I would suggest you invest in this if you strictly can’t go over the $55,000 mark. If you can, there are far more competent and comfortable utes waiting for you.

The best for last, Isuzu offers a flat 5-year flat price servicing which essentially means its capped service costs for ease of mind and further clarity and transparency of maintenance costs for the Isuzu. Take a look;

30,000 km 24 Months / 2 Years $449
45,000 km 36 Months / 3 Years $449
