Roaring into Action: The 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor Review

Est. Reading Time 10 mins

When the simple practicalities of a Ford ute begin to bore you on your daily drives and the sporadic adventure into some mild trails no longer excites you, you can only turn to one offering in the American brand’s lineup – the Ford Ranger Raptor. Fast, agile and off-road capable, we’re here to see how usable this beast really is with that twin-turbo V6 EcoBoost engine and uprated FOX suspension.

Let’s dive right in!

Pros

  • Exceptional ground clearance of 272mm
  • Biggest infotainment screen in the segment

Cons

  • The huge size may make city driving a pain
  • Unchanged brakes from the previous generation
  • No space for an extra battery as in the other Ranger variants
  • The software has blind buttons which don’t respond

What’s new?

  • C-clamp headlights with Matrix LED DRLs
  • 100mm wider than other Ranger variants
  • Other Ranger variants get a blue Ford badge, while Ranger Raptor gets a black one
  • Fox valve suspension system

Okay so, in my not-so-humble opinion, the Ford Ranger Raptor doesn’t have any primal competitors. However, makers at Nissan and Toyota would like you to believe that Nissan Navara and Toyota Rugged X are its competitors. I guess even apex predators like like Ranger Raptor will also have to prove their dominance in the world now.

Variant Price Fuel Efficiency Fuel Type
Raptor $89,190 11.5 L/100 Km Diesel

Exteriors

Styling Elements

The front grille boasts a rather super-sized Ford spelt out in bold block lettering. Now, some people may think that this is gaudy and try too hard but hey, it isn’t just the size that is big about this ute, it's the audacity which the Ranger Raptor comes in. This car is made to off-road. Whether it is the two recovery points just beneath the grille or the 2.3mm thick steel which is basically invisible from the front but very necessary when you’re testing the Australian terrain.

The headlight cluster is entirely matrix headlights with LED DRLs which are also updated to the C-clamp shape that Ford is going on about. The taillights are LED which also entails blind spot monitoring which also includes the trailer proximity detection. This means that not just the car, the BSM will also inform you if another car is nearing your trailer. In addition to that, there are two exhaust pipes which have a bi-modal function and another recovery point.

Colour Options

Ford Ranger Raptor is offered to customers in 8 vibrant colours. All but the Orange colours are worth investing in. Else it’ll just look like a toy car and not the sporty beast the Ranger Raptor is.

The colours are; Arctic White | Meteor Grey | Aluminium Silver | Blue Lightning | Conquer Grey | Sedona Orange | Code Orange | Shadow Black

Wheel Design

The wheel design is the same as is with the other Ranger variants. However, Ranger Raptor doesn’t get a lot of wheel options. Just your standard 17-inch alloy wheels. There’s a reason for that. Smaller alloy wheels mean the ratio of tyre to wheel clad ensures that wheels don’t have any additional weight thrust upon them which leads to better control on the road and minimal lingering on the bumpy roads for which the Ranger Raptor is built for.

Interiors

Interior Layout & Space

The inside of the Ranger is nothing too impressive but nothing too shabby either. The purpose of Ranger is to be an off-roading ute so it is designed adequately for that. There are some scratchy touch points which don’t irk a lot given the area that you are on the dashboard, the centre console, etc.

Apart from that, the centre console is well designed. You get a couple of coffee holders, a drive mode toggle and a gear stick to switch gears which has a leather finish. The build quality is also adequate, nothing too fancy but nothing that might make you apprehensive about getting in the ute.

Fun fact: The AC vents are styled exactly like the front grille. Good detail.

Comfort & Ergonomics

While the seats are pretty comfortable as is with any upper-level variant of the car, what Ford has done is gone a mile ahead. The upholstery now boasts the signature red Raptor accents. Whether it is the seat or the headrests and overall in the cabin, you’ll see naughty little details placed in the Ranger red colour. The front-row seats are electrically adjustable with lumbar support.

Payload Bay

The payload door has a roller made into it which eases loading along with inbuilt clamp outlets which allow you to secure what you tow. Within the bay, there’s a 12V outlet which doesn’t have any power because the Australian government’s design rules prohibit it.

The payload bed comes with inbuilt tie-down hooks and a spray-in bed liner which protects against wear and tear. The dimensions of the bed are as follows;

Length - 1544mm | Width - 1578mm | Height - 526mm | Width between tyre arches - 1218mm

The payload capacity is also a bit underwhelming, but then again, this ute isn’t made to tow heavy it is made to overcome the unforgiving Australian terrain and that it does.

Technology & Infotainment

Ford has surpassed all its competitors in the ute segment by installing a 12.4-inch vertical screen with so many features that you can take a day just going through it.

Performance & Engine

Engine Specifications

Variant Power Torque Engine Configuration
Raptor 391 Bhp 583 Nm 3.0L V6 Twin-Turbo EcoBoost

The Ranger Raptor comes with an EcoBoost engine which is a stronger more muscular engine than the other Ranger variants are equipped with. Unlike other rangers, Ford isn’t trying to bridge the gap between urban driving and off-roading, with such a strong engine, Ford wants you off-road and let the folks in the city wonder where your last expedition took you.

Transmission & Drive System

The Ranger Raptor is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission which has been calibrated especially for the Ranger Raptor. Essentially it is tuned for off-roading and better torque and power allocation for various types of terrains. There are four modes in which you can drive which are; 4 High | 4 Automatic | 4 Low | 2 Low

However, do note that the 2 Low mode provides minimum traction control to the car so best do it when the roads are parched otherwise the Ranger Raptor will just start slipping and crumble under its own power.

Ranger Raptor also comes with bi-modal exhaust outlets. These are there because Ranger Raptor has 4 modes which are; Quiet | Normal | Sport | Baja

Do note that Baja mode is exclusive to off-roading surroundings only, the exhaust is loudest in the Baja setting so do be mindful of that.k

Suspension System

The new suspension system has 3 modes; Normal | Sport | Off-road

Why we’re talking about the suspension is because Ford has outdone itself in terms of suspension for Ranger Raptor. This ute uses a Fox racing 2.5-inch live valve suspension. Basically, it has coil springs like every other car and a specialised unit for the damper which is electronically controlled.

What makes this special is that when you’re riding in Comfort mode, the car will behave like any other car with a posh suspension set-up, however, there is a unit which lurks on simple roads and jumps between the top and bottom of the unit which allows the car to remain composed even on uneven surfaces.

This itself is what you must consider the Ranger Raptor for atleast once. This is cutting-edge suspension technology and it is only going to better on the road. As compared to its siblings, you can see a catastrophic change in the body control and suspension due to the valve set-up of Ranger Raptor on bumpy roads.

Fuel Economy & Efficiency

The fuel economy isn’t very good. While the makers at Ford would want you to believe that 11.5 litres of petrol will be required for every 100km, with utes, the case will always be different. Specially utes which are designed for off-roading, the economy sometimes shows well over 15 litres of petrol for 100km. Do be mindful that this car’s appeal isn’t that it is economical. So running it isn’t cheap but it is thrilling and boy-oh-boy it is.

Another detail to note is that this car can run on RON 91 fuel but for the best results use RON 98 fuel which will make the Ranger Raptor unleash itself for you on the road and off of it.

Handling & Driving Dynamics

The first time you’ll drive this car, your thoughts will be the same as mine, it has no business being this fast. There is no reason why the Ford Ranger Raptor provides such a great control and acceleration even on wet and damp surfaces. It doesn’t skid, split or spit even when you’re punching it on uneven surfaces. Also do take note of the sound, while the cabin is extremely loud, for those of you who grew up playing Need for Speed, it sounds like the cars did in the game. Absolutely melodious!

In addition to that, the Ford Ranger Raptor goes from 0-100 km/h in just under 6 seconds or so people claim. However, Ford hasn’t given an actual figure for that acceleration but yes, safe to say, that this ute is fast.

Apart from the mechanical driving modes that were discussed above, the Ranger Raptor has some actually relevant to the consumer driving modes which are; Normal
| Sport | Slippery | Mud/ Ruts | Baja | Sand | Rock Crawl

Basically a little bit of everything there for everything the Australian terrain has.

Safety Features

Ford has a comprehensive list of safety features. More to that, the safety list isn’t just extremely effective in the urban and sealed surfaces, they’re even extremely sensitive and effective on the off-chance you’re caught in a calamity off-roading.

Crash Test Ratings

The Ford Ranger Raptor doesn’t have an official ANCAP report. While the Ford Ranger has received an ANCAP result, all of the variants are included except the Ford Ranger Raptor. While we wait for the official ANCAP report, do note that Ford Ranger has received 5 stars for its variant tests in 2022. There won’t be much fluctuation in the test report given the Ranger Raptor is made better than its siblings.

Ownership Experience

Owning a 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor is a thrilling experience for adrenaline seekers and off-road enthusiasts. It transforms the base Ranger into a beast, conquering challenging terrain with its high-performance suspension, powerful engine, and aggressive design. The interior gets a sporty upgrade with supportive seats that hold you firm during high-speed manoeuvres. However, this focus on off-road prowess comes with trade-offs. The ride quality on paved roads can be stiff, especially with the heavy-duty suspension. The fuel efficiency might be lower compared to the base Ranger due to the powerful engine. Additionally, the price tag is a significant jump from the standard Ranger. Overall, owning a 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor is an exhilarating adventure, but it's best suited for drivers who prioritise off-road capability and a thrilling ride over everyday comfort and fuel efficiency.

Major Drawbacks

  • The towing capacity is lower than other Ranger variants. The Ranger Raptor can only tow upto 2500kgs which is a tonne less than what the base-level Ranger can tow.
  • The payload capacity is 717kgs which is quite below the average ute capacity in this segment or a few segments below it.
  • The fuel consumption is absurd. Don’t buy this ute if you’re looking for an economical ute. For all intents and purposes, Ford has not made this to be cheap.
  • It weighs around 2.5 tonnes and has a 13m of turning radius which isn’t good at all.

Major Strengths

  • Extremely strong engine which gives immense and unmatchable power and torque in this segment.
  • Ranger Raptor can run on 91 and 98 RON fuel. However, for best results stick to 98 RON fuel.
  • Suspension system itself is worth purchasing this ute. It is exceptionally fine-tuned and will make your off-roading adventures even better.

Verdict

It is always great to review a car like the Ford Ranger Raptor, apart from its abilities into the woods and landscapes which are poetic in nature, it feels like a real test of strength behind the wheel. While this car isn’t much use in urban landscapes, parking alone would be a great issue, it is made for long journeys where you can chase the sun and enjoy some impactful driving without feeling too exhausted at the end of your journey. You can alot of fun with the Ranger Raptor, all you need is to switch it to 2WD mode and let the physics of things make it fun for you. However, there are some complaints about the towing capacity and the payload capacity which aren’t very alike to the other Rangers but you can chalk that upto the usecase of the car.
