The numbers are in for new car sales in Australia through the month of September and it seems the drop in demand has continued. It seems only 97,020 units were delivered to buyers which is slightly fewer than the last month, but a drop of 12.4 percent compared to September 2023 sales.

Let’s take a look at the top performers in the Australian new car market for September 2024:

Rank Make/Model September 2024 Sales
1 Toyota RAV4 5,182
2 Ford Ranger 4,485
3 Toyota HiLux 4,313
4 Ford Everest 2,902
5 Isuzu Ute D-Max 2,612

For the fourth-time this year, the RAV4 has been the best-selling car of the month here. This family-oriented SUV continues to charm the market with its reliable and efficient powertrain, spacious and feature-laden cabin, and respectable road presence. It comfortably outsells the next highest-selling SUV of the month - the Everest. However, Ford still has a slim lead over Toyota in terms of utes with the Ranger outselling the HiLux. Isuzu might be seen as a one-trick-brand but the popularity for the D-Max pickup is no joke.

Let’s see which brands had the best new car sales for the previous month:

Rank Manufacturer September 2024 Sales
1 Toyota 18,110
2 Ford 8,303
3 Mazda 8,201
4 Kia 7,650
5 Mitsubishi 6,130

Toyota truly is cemented in the top spot here, with more than double the sales of its closest rival in Australia. Meanwhile, Ford could be caught up by another Japanese brand as Mazda’s recorded sales were just 102 units fewer than the American brand’s tally. Kia enjoyed another strong month with over 7,500 units sold and Mitsubishi was the fifth most popular car brand in September 2024.

Sales By Segment September 2024 % Of Sales
Passenger 14,488 14.93%
SUV 56,440 58.17%
Light Commercial 21,568 22.23%
Heavy Commercial 4,524 4.67%
Total 97,020 100%

There is a drop in sales across segments compared to September 2023. Currently, utes and SUVs account for 80 percent of the new car demand while the popularity of passenger cars continues to shrink.

According to FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber, the slowdown in monthly new car sales compared to last year is an indication of the difficult economic conditions of today. “During the early part of the year we witnessed record numbers,” he said.  “However, the September result shows that the state of the economy is impacting purchasing intentions.
